Mr. B's Word Lab
STUDENT PRIVACY

Privacy Notice

Mr. B's Word Lab is designed to provide useful practice while collecting as little information as possible.

Effective September 29, 2026

The short version

No student account is required. Reading practice answers and Fluency Studio recordings are not uploaded. Optional teacher tools store only information an educator intentionally enters or collects through a shared assignment, including attendance, intervention plans, assignment completion, scores, elapsed time, missed-skill patterns, sessions, progress monitoring, groups, and custom word lists. Each teacher's records are isolated from other teacher accounts.

Anonymous usage information

To understand whether the site is being used and which activities are helpful, the site records limited, aggregated usage information:

  • Date and page visited
  • General country and state or region supplied by the hosting network
  • Device category: computer, tablet, or mobile
  • Referring website domain, when available
  • Whether a visit began a new browser-tab session

The Word Lab analytics database does not store names, email addresses, student responses, exact street locations, GPS coordinates, or IP addresses. This information is used only to understand overall site use and improve the activities. It is not used for advertising, profiling, or sale.

Classroom Check-In records

A signed-in educator may create a private roster using first names, initials, or other school-approved identifiers and provide each student with a private code. The code itself is not stored; a one-way hash is used to recognize it. When a student checks in or out, the site stores the roster identifier, action, and server timestamp.

The public kiosk does not display any roster. Each teacher's roster, attendance history, filters, and spreadsheet exports are isolated from other teacher accounts and are available only after that teacher signs in.

Teacher Intervention Hub

Signed-in teachers may intentionally save student goals, baselines, targets, instructional notes, assignments, automatic assignment results, session records, progress checks, group membership, and custom word lists and question sets. Goal checks store the score, completion time, and missed-item skill patterns. Student-linked goal checks also create a private progress record. These records are linked to the teacher's private account and are not visible in another teacher's dashboard.

Students may use their existing private attendance code to open a portal showing only assignments and results connected to their own roster record. The code is checked using the same one-way hash and is not stored in the student's browser.

Assignment and custom-practice links use random sharing codes and do not display a student's name. Anyone who receives a sharing link may open that assigned activity or word list, so teachers should distribute links only to the intended students and avoid placing identifying information in public-facing titles.

Information kept on the device

A temporary session marker is stored in the browser tab so one visit is not counted repeatedly. The installed web app may cache pages and assets for offline use.

If an educator chooses to save a Teacher Lab plan, the initials, date, notes, and selections remain in that browser's local storage. They are not sent to the Word Lab analytics database. Clearing browser data removes them.

Microphone and recordings

Fluency Studio requests microphone access only after the user presses the recording button. The recording is created for immediate playback on that device. It is not uploaded, saved to the Word Lab server, or included in analytics. Closing or refreshing the page removes the temporary recording.

Hosting and technical processing

The hosting provider necessarily processes ordinary technical requests to deliver the website and protect its reliability and security. Mr. B's Word Lab does not use advertising networks or third-party behavioral tracking tools.

Students and schools

The reading activities are designed to function without student accounts. Schools and educators remain responsible for following their own technology-approval, student-privacy, attendance-record, and record-handling requirements before using tools that store student information. Educators should enter only the minimum school-approved information needed for instruction.
