ABOUT THE WORD LAB

Older readers deserve support that respects who they are.

Mr. B's Word Lab was created to make foundational reading practice useful, encouraging, and age-appropriate for middle school students.

WHY I BUILT IT

From Mr. B

I'm a middle school special education teacher. I created Mr. B's Word Lab after noticing that students who needed more support in reading often did not have a great resource made for them.

Many available materials presented students with an unfair choice: work that matched their age but was too difficult to access, or foundational reading practice that felt designed for much younger children. Students deserved something better.

Word Lab provides explicit practice with decoding, word parts, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension while keeping the language, design, and topics appropriate for older learners. The goal is not simply to finish an activity. It is to help students understand how reading works, recognize their own growth, and become more independent readers.

Students should be able to work on the reading skills they need without being made to feel younger than they are.
